The film is an American British that was released on the 22nd of September 2006, distributed by universal studios. The plot takes the form of a dystopian thriller. The film takes place in 2027 where humans have been infertile for two decades. However, it is soon discovered that an immigrant woman is fertile and Theo Faron must protect the planet’s last fertile woman from danger.

 

Alfonso Cuaron intention for the film was to portray” a vision of the future in resemblance to our current day situation.” In an exclusive interview with the vulture. “He mentioned that he made the film with “ his eyes wide open, and perceiving the obvious signs of what direction the world was heading in.”This portrays that children of men take into consideration the current events and forecasted events to portray a futuristic atmosphere.

The film was released almost 12 years ago nonetheless the film has become more relevant now than it was in its released. The film explores up to date to the events occurring in the world today. This is due to the uprising division occurring after Brexit and Britain implying its closing is door and the presidency of Donald trump succeeding. The social context of the film was that it was not sold properly by universal studios causing it to gross less than US$70 million, a huge loss for a film that cost $76 million to make.

 

To conclude, I believe that this film was ahead of its time and portrays the current situation we are currently experiencing. Nonetheless, the film was not done justice it only earned three nominations in the Oscars none were for acting, directing, or for Best Picture. However, the film is a must see as it tackles important issues we are experiencing.
